Competing in her first-ever Olympics, the Florida native defeated Tatiana Minina of ROC to win the women’s -57 kg taekwondo final.
With this victory, Zolotic becomes the first American woman to ever win taekwondo gold. She is also the first American taekwondo athlete to win a gold medal since Steven Lopez won the taekwondo title in 2004.
“My 8-year-old self was running around the school yard saying I was going to be Olympic champion but she could never have imagined what this moment is like,” Zolotic said. “It’s unbelievable. It really hasn’t sunk in yet.”
