Tina Charles had 34 points and 17 rebounds to continue her MVP season as the Washington Mystics beat the Chicago Sky 89-85 in overtime Saturday night to snap a four-game losing streak.
In the first half, Washington kept the pressure on Chicago with Tina Charles scoring 16 of her 34 points. Candace Parker was also strong, scoring 13 of her 17 points to keep things close, 46-44.
Entering the fourth, Washington led 70-62. But the game ended up in a 82-all tie as Stefanie Dolson scored 8 points on 4-of-5 shooting while Washington was held to just 12 points.
In the overtime, Natasha Cloud made a driving layup, then Charles stole a pass from Courtney Vandersloot before hitting a three that made it 87-82 with 3:43 left in overtime. The Mystics never relinquished the lead.
Ariel Atkins chipped in 14 points, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough had 12 and Theresa Plaisance added 10 points and eight rebounds for Washington. Cloud tied her career high with 11 assists.
Charles is having a career year in her first with the Mystics. She’s averaging a career-best and league-leading 25.8 points and 9.6 rebounds while shooting a career-high 36% from 3-point range.
The Mystics are now out for the Olympic break and we will have regular content on the games as they happen. They are now 8-10 for the season. Washington won’t be back until Aug. 15 when they head on the road to play the Las Vegas Aces.
