Kurt Busch outduels his baby brother in the Quaker State 400 at Atlanta Motor Speedway Sunday evening.
There’s only a few times the Busch brothers have had 1-2 finishes in their Cup career. Once in 2015 at Sonoma, where Kyle reigned supreme. Another time in 2019 at Bristol, in which Kyle took that one too. But at Kentucky in 2019, Kurt finally got a win against his kid brother. And now he has another win to add to his belt.
Lap one started with Chase Elliott leading inside and Kyle Busch second outside. Chase Elliott easily clears the field on start. On lap 31, Cody Ware got loose under Anthony Alfredo who clipped Ricky Stenhouse Jr. who got together with Daniel Suarez on the backstretch. Stenhouse hit the inside wall hard and Suarez also made contact.
But this race was about the Busch bros. Kyle Busch and Kurt Busch ran first and second, 4.5 seconds ahead of the field but eventually Kyle Busch wins stage 1.
Stage 2 was non-eventful. Ryan Newman was penalized for crew over the wall too soon on lap 123 and the rain started to fall. But Kurt Busch won stage 2.
On lap 168, a red flag was issued to repair track surface in turn 4. The asphalt broke and left a sizable hole on the front stretch. The safety crew immediately headed out to the affected area and began examining how to best fix the damage.
NASCAR estimated that the repairs would take roughly eight to 10 minutes. However, the race remained under red flag conditions for 19 minutes and four seconds. The crew eventually made repairs and told the drivers to fire their engines once more. The Cup Series cars took some caution laps before the race went green with 90 laps remaining.
On the restart, Kurt lead inside, Kyle outside and Alex Bowman take second from Kyle Busch. On lap 212, Kurt pit from the lead, and Kyle passed Kurt to take the lead. On lap 236, Kurt had closed on Kyle as Kyle got stuck behind Ross Chasstain and on lap 237, Kurt took the lead as he and Kyle ran side by side. Briefly on lap 254, Kyle caught up to Kurt for the lead but lost shape and got into the wall. Kurt took the lead back and never relinquished it until he got that checkered flag.
