The 17-year-old lost to former Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber 6-4, 6-4 on Centre Court on Manic Monday.
Gauff did all she could to maintain contact. She exits the tournament at the same stage as she did two years ago, and Kerber was the first to compliment the young star.
“Coco is such a great, talented young player,” Kerber said. “I’m really sure she will have a great career.”
Despite falling in the same round as in her breakthrough at Wimbledon two years ago, Coco continues to emerge as a huge star. The results show the progress Gauff has made as her game continues to grow. Two years ago, much of her success was owed to the mental fortitude she showed in three-set matches.
The quality of Gauff’s game is improving each week and she leaves Wimbledon now having reached the second week of two consecutive grand slams.
