As the Washington Mystics roster remains in flux, Elena Delle Donne’s return remain murky as she isn’t expected back until August.
Delle Donne has been rehabbing from a pair of back surgeries, and the original hope was that she would be limited during training camp but have a chance to open the season on a minutes restriction. That goal wasn’t reached, and was pushed back to having her miss the first two to six games of the season. That expectation didn’t occur either, and now the reality is she may not have be ready to return until August.
Coach Mike Thibault said Delle Donne, 31, still hasn’t done any five-on-five work but is progressing. She is doing some one-on-one work this week in practice and has begun to do more defensive drills, but there still isn’t a definite time frame for her return.
Mystics currently stand at 4-6 and will play their last game before the five-week Olympic break on July 10.
In Delle Donne’s wake, Mystics center Tina Charles has carried the load, averaging 24.0 points per game through the first 10 games of the season, the most in the league.
Charles has been named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the week of June 6- June 13. This marks her first Player of the Week recognition with the Mystics and the 31st of her career.
